Assamese Hindu Matrimony - Customs and Traditions

Assam is a important province of the Indian Republic which lies to the north-east of the country abd is known all over for its wild life, exotic natural landscapes and wonderful freshness. The Assamese matrimonial customs and traditions is based on Vedic traditions and rituals. Wedding ceremony of assamese aims not only just a marriage of two people, but also a merger of two families. The good-natured Assamese people have their own way of celebrating their festivals and mariage occasions.

Assamese Juran Ceremony

Normally this ceremony takes place two days prior to wedding and it is meant for women. The groom’s mother visits the bride’s house along with her relatives. The bride’s mother invite the guests with a brass plate with a stem. It consists of betel nut and betel leaves, which are covered with a gamocha. Gamocha is cloth woven specially for the wedding.

Tel Diya Custom

Tel Diya is the main pre wedding custom of Assamese. In this ritual, the bridegroom’s mother places a ring and betel on her daughter-in-law’s hair parting.Then oil is poured thrice on the betel. Then,she applies sindoor and presents her wedding dress which includes ‘mekhla chadar’, the traditional Assamese dress for women.

Pani Tola

The ritual of pani tola is performed after Tel diya. Holy water is gathered by the bride and gooms mother.It is later used for the ceremonial bath. Pani Tola is followed by the nuani.Nauni is a tradition of bathing the bride and helping her to get ready for the wedding. Several cosmetic pastes are applied to make her ready for the wedding.

Ceremonial Bath

On the wedding day, the Assamese bride and groom take ceremonial bath which takes place in their respective homes with fun and games,. Girl is dressed up in traditional shawl and jewels.

Wedding Reception

Speciality of Assamese community wedding is, reception party is conducted with various dishes even before the marriage ceremony. Very tasty & nutritious food is served to the guests. Main highlights of the wedding reception menu is Fish & meat.

Arrival Of The Groom

In Assamese wedding,all guests will gather at the ceremony site and eagerly wait the groom’s arrival. The groom arrive the ceremony site accompanied by his friends and relatives to the site of the wedding. Relatives and children set off fireworks mark the arrival of the groom.Bride’s relatives throw rice for good luck. Bridegroom’s best friends will hold up an umbrella to guard bridegroom from the rice shower. All the friends and relatives are welcomed with great honour at the brides house.The bride’s family indulges in fun time activities with the groom.

Important fun of assamese wedding occassion is,the bridegrooms marriage procession is not given entry into the brides home until they pay some price for it. Brides friends and relatives ask for good reasons why bridegroom choose to marry their girl.As bridegroom explains the reasons,all the brides relatives will cross question him.The whole atmosphere is filled with laughter and fun.

Arrival of the groom

Once the groom has arrived, the bride’s mother performs ceremonial worship and then steps out to welcome his future son-in-law accompanied by her female relatives.

Then bride’s older brother greet’s his future brother-in-law with nice gift and a warm embrace. Then rest of relatives welcome bridegroom and his relatives in turn. The bride’s younger sister washes the groom’s feet. Thereafter, With all cheers the bride’s brother lifts groom and takes him to the wedding hall.

Wedding Cermony

In a traditional Assamese wedding, the bridegroom dresses up in dhoti and kurta, with a silk shawl draped across his shoulder. A mixture of ghee, curd, sugar, honey and raw milk which is called panch-amrit is given to the bride to eat. Next event is unique & noticeble entry of the bride.The bride is carried by his maternal uncle to the venue for the wedding. The groom is welcomed by his mother in law and is lifted by the brides brother who takes him to the wedding hall.

Bride and bridegroom put garland of flowers on each other.A sacred fire is lit and wedding ceremony is held in front of it amidst the chanting of mantras by brahmins. Friends and relatives watch the proceedings from chairs seated around the periphery of the ceremony. The couple exchanges their garlands and takes vows. Conch shells are blown to mark the celebration. The bridegroom applies sindoor on his wife’s forehead. Thereafter, the friends and relatives come forward to bless the newly wedded couple. After the marriage ceremony, asupicious time is noted for the departure of the bride to the grooms house.Bride leaves her parents house with heavy heart.

Grah parvesh ceremony is held after the bride reaches her new house.Bride is given a warm welcome at her new house by the friends, relatives and members of the family. Her mother in law performs her arati and is blessed with prosperity and good luck for her new life..
